Siglufjörður is Iceland’s northernmost mainland town, set at the head of a narrow fjord on the mountainous Trollaskagi Peninsula. Steep slopes rise closely around the harbor, giving the settlement a compact setting shaped by the sea and mountains. Fishing remains central to local life, while the harbor, small streets, cafés, galleries, and museums reflect the town’s role as a regional community. Siglufjörður is also a base for outdoor activities, with hiking routes, a nine-hole golf course, a swimming pool, and winter skiing in nearby Skarðsdalur.

The town’s identity is strongly connected to Iceland’s herring industry. The Herring Era Museum occupies several historic buildings beside the harbor and preserves equipment, boats, processing facilities, and living quarters associated with the fishery. Exhibits also explain the role of the women who worked in herring salting and processing. Another important cultural institution is the Folk Music Centre, which explores Icelandic traditional music and the work of composer and collector Bjarni Þorsteinsson, who lived in Siglufjörður. Folk music remains part of local cultural life through concerts and an annual festival.

The surrounding landscape provides opportunities to explore the Trollaskagi mountains and the fjord coast. Hiking trails lead into valleys and higher terrain around Siglufjörður, while the nearby Héðinsfjörður valley offers another setting for walks and scenic drives. In winter, the Skarðsdalur ski area provides downhill skiing, and cross-country trails are available in Hólsdalur. The town itself is worth exploring on foot, particularly around the harbor, where historic buildings, working boats, and views toward the mountains illustrate the close relationship between the settlement and its maritime environment.

Local dining naturally draws on Icelandic ingredients, particularly fish and lamb. Fresh cod and other seafood are commonly found in restaurants around the harbor, while cafés provide lighter meals and locally made treats. Herring has an important historical role but is not necessarily a dominant item on modern menus. Siglufjörður also has an active arts scene, with galleries, workshops, and cultural centers occupying parts of the town. Its combination of a working fishing harbor, preserved industrial heritage, traditional music, and access to mountain landscapes gives the settlement a distinctive place in North Iceland.
