Quatre Cocos is a village on the eastern side of Mauritius, within the Flacq District and close to the Indian Ocean coast. It lies between the large settlement of Centre de Flacq and the beaches around Belle Mare, in an area shaped by sugarcane fields, small residential communities and coastal agriculture. The village is part of a relatively flat eastern plain, with the mountains of Mauritius’s interior visible to the west. Its location provides access to the long Belle Mare coastline as well as the markets, shops and public services of nearby Centre de Flacq.

Quatre Cocos reflects the multicultural character of rural Mauritius, where communities of Indian, African, European and Chinese heritage have contributed to local customs. Mauritian Creole is widely used in everyday conversation, while Bhojpuri, French and English also form part of the island’s linguistic landscape. Hindu temples, Christian churches and other places of worship across Flacq illustrate the area’s religious diversity. Sugar cultivation has also had a major influence on local identity and settlement patterns. Nearby former sugar estates and fields are reminders of an industry that shaped generations of work, migration and community development across eastern Mauritius.

The principal natural attractions near Quatre Cocos are found along the eastern shoreline. Belle Mare Beach has a long stretch of pale sand facing a broad lagoon protected by an offshore coral reef. Farther south, Palmar continues the sandy coastline, while north of the village the coast leads toward Poste de Flacq. Inland, the Flacq region is crossed by streams and agricultural land, with volcanic peaks rising farther west. Quatre Cocos is also within reach of Bras d’Eau National Park, where walking trails pass through dry forest, old orchard areas and remnants of volcanic formations near the northeast coast.

Food in Quatre Cocos follows the varied culinary traditions found throughout Mauritius. Dholl puri, farata, curries, fried noodles and rice dishes are common, often accompanied by tomato-based rougaille, chutneys or pickled vegetables. Fresh fish and seafood are readily associated with communities along the nearby east coast. Centre de Flacq has one of the island’s largest open-air markets, where vendors sell tropical fruit, vegetables, spices, clothing and prepared foods.
