Masalli is a town in southeastern Azerbaijan, situated between the Talysh Mountains and the Caspian Sea. The district is known for its humid subtropical climate, fertile lowlands, forested mountain slopes, and numerous mineral springs. Tea plantations, citrus orchards, rice fields, and other cultivated areas are found across the surrounding countryside, while the Talysh Mountains rise toward the west. Masalli serves as a gateway to several natural attractions, including the forests and waterfalls of Yardimli and Lerik districts. The area is also recognized for its traditional rural settlements, spa facilities, and close connection with the landscapes of the southern Talysh region.

Masalli's cultural identity reflects the traditions of the Talysh people, whose communities are concentrated across southern Azerbaijan. Talysh language, music, cuisine, handicrafts, and rural customs remain part of the region's cultural heritage. Traditional weaving and woodworking are practiced in some local communities, while tea cultivation has become an important part of the area's agricultural identity. The village of Arkivan, near Masalli, is known for its thermal and mineral springs and traditional rural setting. Local museums and cultural centers provide further insight into the history, crafts, and everyday life of Masalli and the surrounding Talysh communities.

The Hirkan National Park is one of the principal natural attractions accessible from Masalli, protecting dense subtropical forests containing rare and endemic plant species. The park's landscape includes steep forested hills, streams, and valleys characteristic of the Talysh Mountains. Istisu, near Arkivan, is known for its mineral and thermal springs, while the nearby village of Sim offers access to forest landscapes and waterfalls. The Masalli region also contains numerous springs and small rivers fed by the mountains. These environments create a marked contrast between the fertile lowlands around the town and the heavily wooded slopes farther inland.

Masalli's food culture is closely connected with its fertile climate and Talysh traditions. Rice dishes, fresh herbs, vegetables, fish, poultry, and locally grown fruit are common ingredients, while regional cooking often combines sour flavors with aromatic herbs. Tea is particularly important, as the area's climate supports tea cultivation and local tea is commonly served during social gatherings. Citrus fruits, including mandarins and lemons, are also grown in the district. The combination of tea plantations, subtropical orchards, mineral springs, and Talysh culinary traditions gives Masalli a distinctive place within southern Azerbaijan and makes the surrounding countryside an important part of its local identity.
